Advantages of RAS Technology
The Groton, New York Facility
Our production facility is located in Groton, New York, near
Ithaca and Cornell University. The Groton facility is an indoor RAS
facility which utilizes a series of large circular tanks to grow
tilapia. Inputs to the facility include fingerlings (baby fish), water,
feed, oxygen, electricity and natural gas (for heat). The environment is
strictly monitored and controlled. Fish waste is removed from the
bottom of the tanks and sent to the sewer, while the water is filtered,
reconditioned, and recirculated back to the tanks. As the fingerlings
grow, they are transferred to increasingly larger tanks, until they are
harvested.
Aquafilter Technology
The patented Aquafilter is a key to cost effectiveness. It
cleans the water efficiently, allowing the fish to grow quickly and
convert a substantial amount of feed to body mass. As a result,
production using Aquafilter technology is significantly higher than
production using older technology, and operating costs per pound drop
substantially. Aquafilter technology is patented through the Cornell
Research Foundation (CRF), and Fingerlakes has an exclusive worldwide
license to use and distribute the technology. Fingerlakes believes that
Aquafilter technology gives it a competitive advantage in the fish
farming industry.
